Emma: Well, its foundation is Roman-Dutch law, which is from the European civil law tradition. But then you have a huge layer of English common law on top of that.

James: Okay, so a Dutch base with an English topping. Got it.

Emma: And critically, it also recognizes African customary law. This mix is why we also call it a plural legal system.

James: So with all these different sources, where is it all written down? Is there one giant, official book of laws?

Emma: That's the surprising part—no! South Africa has an uncodified system, meaning there's no single, comprehensive legal code.

James: Wait, really? How does anyone know what the law is then?

Emma: Lawyers have to draw from different primary sources. They look at statutes passed by Parliament, common law principles, judicial precedents—which are past court decisions—and customary laws.
