Jack: Here's the one thing that trips up 80% of students on sequences—and how to never get it wrong again.
Ava: This is Studyfi Podcast, and we're jumping straight into the rules that govern number patterns.
Jack: Let’s start with the easy one: the term-to-term rule. That’s just finding the jump between numbers, right?
Ava: Exactly! Take the sequence 7, 10.5, 14... The rule is simply 'add 3.5'. Easy points on an exam!
Jack: So that's the simple part. Where does it get tricky?
Ava: It’s the position-to-term rule, also called the nth term. This is the powerful one! It lets you find any term in the sequence instantly.
Jack: Like a magic formula?
Ava: Totally! Let’s take the sequence 18, 16, 14... It’s going down by 2 each time, so the formula starts with -2n.
Jack: Okay, so 'n' is the position. For the first term, n is 1. -2 times 1 is -2. But the term is 18...
Ava: Correct! So, what do we add to -2 to get to 18?
Jack: Uh... you add 20!
Ava: Bingo! The rule is -2n + 20. Now you can find the 50th term without writing out all the numbers before it. That’s the 'aha' moment that saves you so much time.
