Lily: A decade? That’s a long time for jobs to stay open. How serious is this shortage?

Jack: It’s huge. Articles from as far back as 2011 were calling it a crisis. One report estimated the shortage was between 50,000 and 80,000 artisans.

Lily: Wow! So we're talking about plumbers, electricians, fitters and turners…

Jack: And carpenters, welders, mechanics—you name it. A personnel agency manager said, 'Everyone wants to be a lawyer or an accountant,' but good artisans can almost choose where they want to work.

Lily: I guess not everyone can work in an office. So the demand is definitely there.

Jack: The demand is massive. And there’s a clear pathway for students who are interested.

Lily: Okay, so where does someone start? Is there a central place for information?

Jack: There is. It’s called the National Artisan Development Support Centre, or NADSC. Think of it as your one-stop-shop.

Lily: What do they offer?

Jack: They provide career guidance, lists of training colleges, and can even help place you in an apprenticeship with an employer. They also offer bridging courses if your maths or science marks aren't quite there yet.

Lily: So to recap: there’s a huge, long-term demand for skilled artisans in South Africa.

Jack: Absolutely. And organisations like the NADSC are there to help you get started on a really promising and secure career path. It’s a field full of opportunity.
