Ligaments of the Vertebral Arches (posterior elements)

These accessory ligaments connect laminae, spinous and transverse processes and stabilize facet joints.

Ligamenta flava

Definition: Ligamenta flava are paired, elastic ligaments that connect the lamina of one vertebra to the lamina of the vertebra below, forming part of the posterior wall of the vertebral canal.

  • Composition: yellow elastic tissue (high elastin content).
  • Orientation: run almost vertically from anterior surface of lamina above to posterior surface of lamina below; paired and often converge midline.
  • Function:
    • Resist separation of laminae during flexion
    • Assist recoil during extension to restore erect posture

  • Location: lie between spinous processes; blend ventrally with ligamenta flava and dorsally with supraspinous ligament.

Supraspinous ligament

Definition: A strong cord-like ligament that connects the tips of spinous processes from C7 to the sacrum.
