Now, fast forward just nine years, to 1449. The French army returns, but this time, they bring something new. Sixteen massive cannons, or bombards. This time, the siege lasts just seventeen days.
Ava: A six-month siege becomes a seventeen-day victory. That’s the moment everything changed. That’s the power of artillery. You are listening to Studyfi Podcast.
Dan: So, Ava, this was a huge shift. Before these massive cannons, what were armies using to knock down walls?
Ava: For centuries, it was all about siege engines like the trebuchet—those giant, stone-throwing catapults you see in movies. And they were still around in the early 15th century. A military writer in 1409, Christine de Pisan, considered them just as essential as the new gunpowder weapons.
Dan: So they were still effective, for a while at least.
Ava: Exactly. They saw action in France into the 1420s. But just ten years later, the bombard was the undisputed king of the battlefield. The age of the trebuchet was over.
Dan: What made that decade, the 1430s, such a turning point?
Ava: The results speak for themselves. In 1430, at one siege, the big guns did 'so much damage to the walls of the castle that the garrison capitulated'. Three years later, at another, artillery 'damaged them greatly, breaches being made in diverse parts'.
Dan: So these weren't just chipping away at the stone anymore. They were creating actual holes in the defenses.
Ava: Big ones. By 1437, it was common for gunfire to leave 'a great part of the walls... thrown to the ground'. Suddenly, towns that had been safe for generations were, and I quote, 'in no way defensible'.
Dan: Were there any exceptions? Could any castle hold out?
Ava: A few. If a fortress was built on a high cliff, for instance, topography could place it beyond the range of the guns. Or if the besieging army just didn't bring enough firepower. But generally, from the 1430s on, if a major army with a proper siege train showed up, your vertical walls were coming down.
Dan: And that story about Harfleur… that was just one example?
Ava: One of more than seventy! Between May 1449 and August 1450, over seventy English strongholds in Normandy fell to the French. Not all were bombarded into submission—some were abandoned, others fell to treachery—but most surrendered simply because the French siege train made resistance futile.
Dan: Okay, so what was the secret sauce? What made these cannons so much better so quickly?
Ava: It really came down to a few key technological innovations. Early cannons had a very limited range. To do any real damage, you had to get them incredibly close to the walls.
Dan: Which sounds… risky.
Ava: Extremely risky! Get too close, and the defenders could send out a raiding party to capture or destroy your very expensive new toy. Even into the 16th century, military experts said that under 100 yards was too close to be safe, but over 300 yards was too far to be effective.
Dan: A tiny window to work with.
Ava: A very tiny one. And the earliest guns, from the 1320s, couldn't even dent a reinforced wall at 100 yards. The problem was the ratio of the barrel length to the size of the cannonball. In the early 15th century, it was rarely more than 1.5-to-1.
Dan: Like a short, stubby barrel.
Ava: Exactly. But by 1430, that ratio had doubled to 3-to-1. This longer barrel dramatically increased accuracy, muzzle velocity, and therefore, range.
Dan: So a longer barrel was a big deal. Was that it?
Ava: Not at all. Right around the same time, someone figured out that 'corned' gunpowder was way more effective. This is gunpowder prepared in small granules instead of a fine powder.
Dan: What difference does that make?
Ava: It allows oxygen to mix in more evenly, creating a much more powerful and consistent explosion. Some people at the time reckoned it was three times more effective than the old stuff. Plus, they started using iron or lead bullets instead of stone.
Dan: I can imagine an iron ball does a bit more damage than a big rock.
Ava: Just a bit. So you’ve got longer barrels for more velocity, better gunpowder for more power, and denser projectiles for more impact. It was the perfect storm for castle walls.
Dan: Building these things must have been a challenge. We're talking about massive metal tubes designed to contain explosions.
Ava: And in the early days, they weren't very good at it! For a while, the biggest cannons were made like a beer barrel.
Dan: You're joking. Like, with wooden staves?
Ava: Not wood, but with forged iron staves held together by giant iron hoops. And as you can imagine, this could, and did, lead to disaster.
Dan: Oh no. I see where this is going.
Ava: Yep. In 1445, a large Burgundian cannon being used against the Turks blew up because it was fired too often. First, two hoops burst. On the next shot, two more hoops and a whole stave exploded.
Dan: So the cannon basically disintegrated.
Ava: And it wasn't a one-off incident. In 1460, King James the Second of Scotland died when he stood too close to one of his own cannons when it exploded. A famous cannon called 'Mons Meg', which you can still see at Edinburgh Castle, also burst a hoop, rendering it useless.
Dan: So you’re saying being the king's chief gunner was a job with a… high turnover rate?
Ava: Let’s just say it was a high-risk, high-reward profession. Eventually, improvements in metallurgy allowed them to cast single, massive bronze guns, which were far more reliable.
Dan: Okay, so you’ve got these massive, multi-ton bronze cannons. How on earth do you get them to the battle?
Ava: With extreme difficulty. This is a crucial point. Moving these guns required a safe route, which usually meant you needed a whole army or a navy to protect the siege train.
Dan: So you couldn't just sneak a cannon up to a castle gate.
Ava: Absolutely not. It meant that, until you’d already defeated the enemy’s main army in the field, heavy artillery could really only be used in two scenarios: against seaports, where you could bring them in by ship, like at Constantinople in 1453, or as part of a major campaign where the entire army and the siege train moved together at a snail's pace.
Dan: Which explains why they weren’t used in every battle.
Ava: Precisely. In medieval field battles, artillery was often more for show. At the Battle of Crécy in 1346, a writer said the English 'fired off some cannons... to frighten the Genoese crossbowmen'. It was psychological warfare.
Dan: Just a big scary noise.
Ava: But a century later, things had changed again. The range of artillery surpassed that of archers. And new designs, like adding pivots called trunnions and two-wheeled carriages, made them much easier and faster to aim. The big gun was here to stay.
Dan: So if you're a ruler and your stone castles are suddenly obsolete, what do you do? You can't just give up.
Ava: You innovate. The answer came from an Italian architect and humanist, Leon Battista Alberti, way back in the 1440s. He argued that fortifications should be built in uneven lines, 'like the teeth of a saw'.
Dan: Why like a saw?
Ava: Because it creates angles. Alberti speculated that a star-shaped fortress would be best because it provides interlocking fields of fire. There would be no 'dead zones' where an attacker could hide from your defenders' cannons.
Dan: So from any point on the wall, you could shoot at the guys attacking the wall next to you.
Ava: Exactly! This design, with huge, angled bastions, became known as the 'artillery fortress' or the 'modern style'. It was revolutionary because it was designed not just to resist cannon fire, but to use cannon fire defensively.
Dan: And did it work?
Ava: It worked incredibly well. By 1550, this new style dominated Italy and the border between France and the Netherlands. These weren't small projects, either. Between 1529 and 1572, they built 26 miles of these defenses in the Netherlands alone.
Dan: Building a giant, star-shaped fortress sounds… expensive.
Ava: Unbelievably expensive. And it took forever. The citadel at Antwerp, started in 1567, took over three years to complete. It involved moving 650,000 cubic yards of earth and building over 200,000 cubic yards of masonry.
Dan: You couldn't just build one in response to a threat. You had to plan way ahead.
Ava: Right. Machiavelli actually wrote a report for Florence in 1526 about this. He said you basically had two choices: either tear down your old walls and build a much bigger new circuit, or build a smaller, more defensible circuit and abandon the rest of your city.
Dan: Wow. Tough choice. So this changed the nature of war itself, didn't it?
Ava: Completely. Gone were the days of conquering 70 fortresses in a single summer. With these new bastions, taking one or two in a campaign was a major victory. Sieges took far, far longer.
Dan: Because you couldn't just punch a hole in the wall anymore.
Ava: Right. Now you had to build a whole set of your own fortifications around the fortress to starve them out or slowly dig trenches forward to get close enough for your own cannons to be effective. The great military engineer Vauban said you needed ten attackers for every one defender to succeed.
Dan: Ten to one! And you’re not just attacking. You have to defend your own territory too.
Ava: Yes, and that tied down an incredible number of soldiers. Louis the Fourteenth of France, for example, had to commit almost half his entire army—over 170,000 men in 1705—just to man the garrisons of his own fortresses. It was a massive, costly stalemate machine, all kicked off by those first successful bombards.
Dan: So these new artillery fortresses sound completely unbeatable. But… they must have cost a fortune, right?
Ava: A staggering fortune. That was the biggest drawback. Let me give you a couple of examples. In 1542, the papacy wanted to build a ring of 18 huge bastions around Rome.
Dan: Eighteen! That's ambitious.
Ava: It was. They gave up after the bill for the very *first* one came in. And in Venice, they planned a fortress with twelve bastions but had to cut it down to nine just to save money.
Dan: And that still wasn't cheap, I'm guessing?
Ava: Not even close. Building just those nine cost them more than their entire annual state revenue. And that's not even counting the high social costs of clearing huge areas of suburbs for construction.
Dan: So if you weren't a pope or a Venetian magnate, what were your options?
Ava: Well, that's where a familiar name comes in—Machiavelli. He proposed a third way that was much faster and cheaper, though not quite as robust.
Dan: A budget-friendly fortress? I'm listening.
Ava: Exactly. Instead of building from scratch, you'd drastically modify your existing medieval walls. You'd lower them, make them way thicker, and reshape old towers into bastions.
Dan: And what were they thickening them with? Not more stone, surely.
Ava: Mostly just earth. They'd pile up huge earthen ramparts behind the stone. They eroded after a few years, sure, but they were amazing at absorbing cannon fire.
Dan: So did these
Dan: So that really puts a cap on traditional medieval warfare. But Ava, it feels like we're on the edge of a massive change. What happens when swords and bows meet something... explosive?
Ava: That's the perfect way to put it, Dan. Everything changes. There’s a fantastic military book from 1598 where a gentleman is nostalgically praising the good old English longbow.
Dan: Ah, the classics! Can't beat a good bit of wood and string, right?
Ava: Well, the captain he was talking to had a very different opinion. His reply was withering. He said, “Sir, then was then, and now is now. The wars are much altered since the fiery weapons first came up.”
Dan: Oof. “Then was then, and now is now.” That’s a pretty blunt way to say ‘get with the times’.
Ava: Exactly. And he wasn't alone. Another veteran at the time basically said that legends like Alexander the Great and Hannibal would have had a much harder time if they’d faced the fortresses and weapons of the 16th century. This was a revolution, and everyone on the ground knew it.
Dan: So where did these “fiery weapons” even come from? It feels like they just appeared out of nowhere.
Ava: It's a great question. The story actually starts in China, maybe as early as the 9th century. They discovered the correct formula for gunpowder—saltpetre, sulphur, and charcoal.
Dan: And how did it become a weapon?
Ava: By the 13th century, Mongol armies were already using things like metal bombards and grenades. The new tech spread incredibly fast. We think the first guns showed up in Europe sometime in the 1320s.
Dan: So what were they using them for? Battering down castle walls?
Ava: Not at first, and this is the surprising part. The earliest pictures we have show them being fired at wooden castle gates. For a hundred years, they were basically used like glorified catapults.
Dan: You mean, to just lob stuff into a town to cause chaos, not to actually break the stone walls?
Ava: Precisely. They were used against ‘soft’ targets. It would damage buildings and maybe keep the defenders awake, but you still had to starve the town out. The real wall-smashing power came later.
Dan: Okay, so once the cannons got more powerful, it must have totally changed strategy. You can't just hide behind a wall anymore.
Ava: It changed everything. It even challenges ideas from much later military thinkers. For example, have you ever heard of Carl von Clausewitz?
Dan: The name sounds vaguely familiar from a history class. He was a big deal, right?
Ava: A very big deal. He wrote a hugely influential book called *On War*. In it, he talks about a concept he borrowed from physics: the ‘center of gravity’.
Dan: Okay, now you *really* sound like my old physics teacher. What's the military version?
Ava: Stay with me! He argued that in any war, there's one key thing—a center of gravity—that you must destroy to win. For commanders like Alexander the Great or Frederick the Great, that center was their army.
Dan: So, find the main army, crush it in a big battle, and boom—you win the war. Simple.
Ava: That was the idea. Destroy the army, and the leader would go down in history as a failure. But here's the thing... the gunpowder age broke that rule.
Dan: How so? Give me an example.
Ava: Let's look at Sweden in the 17th century. Their superstar general, Gustavus Adolphus, was killed. Two years later, in 1634, the main Swedish army was absolutely smashed at the Battle of Nördlingen.
Dan: So according to Clausewitz, that should be game over for Sweden, right? Their center of gravity was destroyed.
Ava: It should have been. But it wasn't. When the war finally ended years later, Sweden had achieved all of its major goals. They got territory, security guarantees, everything.
Dan: Wait, how is that possible? They lost their main army!
Ava: Because their strength wasn't just in one army. It was spread out. Even after that huge defeat, they still had 70,000 troops in Germany. And here's the key—almost half of them were stationed in 127 different fortified strongholds.
Dan: Whoa. So there was no single ‘center of gravity’ to hit. It was like trying to destroy a spiderweb by swatting one strand. You had to take down every single fortress.
Ava: Exactly! Gunpowder warfare created a situation where you couldn't land a single knockout blow.
Dan: That sounds incredibly frustrating for an invading army.
Ava: It was a nightmare. There’s a perfect summary of this problem from the Spanish commander trying to crush the Dutch Revolt in the 1570s.
Dan: What did he have to say? I bet he was tearing his hair out.
Ava: He basically wrote a letter to the King of Spain, Philip II, and said, and I’m paraphrasing here: “There isn’t enough time or money in the world to capture all twenty-four of these rebel towns if each one takes as long as the last one did.”
Dan: That sounds like the most epic complaint letter ever written to a boss. “This project is impossible, and we’re broke.”
Ava: Pretty much! It perfectly captures how these new artillery fortresses made war a long, grinding, and incredibly expensive slog. You couldn’t just win with one heroic battle anymore.
Dan: So gunpowder didn't just change the weapons, it completely rewrote the playbook for how to win, or even survive, a war. It sounds like this would have a massive impact on the economy of these nations, too.
Ava: It absolutely did. And that's a perfect place to pivot, because the financial burden of this new type of warfare created a whole new set of challenges for rulers across Europe.
Ava: And that really gets to the heart of it. These new artillery fortresses completely changed the game, not just tactically, but financially.
Dan: So it wasn't just about building the fancy new walls. The consequences were much bigger?
Ava: Exactly. Take the Dutch revolt against King Philip of Spain. His armies were the best in the world, but they couldn't break the fortresses in Holland. The war just dragged on and on.
Dan: And that costs money. A *lot* of money.
Ava: So much money that Philip's treasury went bankrupt in 1575. His army literally mutinied because they weren't getting paid. They just walked away.
Dan: Wow. So the forts won by just... existing?
Ava: In a way, yes! Sieges became more important than big, decisive battles. The goal wasn't to crush your enemy in a day, but to wear them down over years.
Dan: Sounds miserable. And expensive.
Ava: A top English minister complained in 1565 that wars were now 'treble more chargeable'. Triple the cost!
Dan: I can just hear him sighing at his desk.
Ava: And a Spanish diplomat, Don Bernardino de Mendoza, basically said victory goes to whoever has the last coin. An Italian theorist, Giovanni Botero, put it perfectly: 'the object is not to smash but to tire'.
Dan: Okay, so these endless sieges are a huge money pit. But was it *just* the technology driving up the cost?
Ava: That's a great question. And the answer is no. There were other major forces at work. The first one is something historians call the ‘price revolution’.
Dan: A price revolution? What’s that?
Ava: Think of it this way: Europe's population basically doubled between 1450 and 1580. More people means more demand for everything—food, clothes, weapons, you name it.
Dan: Simple supply and demand. So everything just got more expensive, including running an army.
Ava: Precisely. Food costs went up about four percent every single year. It doesn't sound like much, but it adds up over a long war.
Dan: And states didn't even cover all the costs themselves, right?
Ava: Not even close. They outsourced a ton of it. Cities were often forced to pay for their own defense. Antwerp, for example, built these incredible new walls and a citadel... and paid for it with local taxes.
Dan: Let me guess, that wasn't cheap.
Ava: The fortification fund they set up to pay for it all? It still wasn't paid off two centuries later.

Ava: It really was. And on top of all this economic pressure, a massive political problem was brewing. It all started with a wedding.

Ava: In 1477, Maximilian of Habsburg married Mary of Burgundy. It was a huge power move. Through a series of other lucky marriages and untimely deaths, their grandson, Charles the Fifth, inherited a mind-boggling amount of territory.

Ava: He became ruler of the Netherlands, then King of Spain and parts of Italy, and finally, Holy Roman Emperor. He basically controlled a huge chunk of Europe.
Dan: And I'm guessing France, their main rival, was not thrilled about this.
Ava: Not at all. France was suddenly surrounded by Habsburg lands. They felt like they were in a stranglehold.
Dan: So they had no choice but to fight back, to try and break out.
Ava: Exactly. And that led to over a century of conflict. It was a dynastic rivalry on a scale never seen before.
Dan: So how did France fight a war against an enemy that was... well, everywhere?
Ava: They realized they couldn't just fight in one place at a time. They had to fight everywhere at once. It was the only way.
Dan: Can you give me an example?
Ava: Sure. In the autumn of 1552, while Emperor Charles was besieging the city of Metz, the French King, Henry the Second, had an army watching that siege.
Dan: Okay, one army.
Ava: He had another army on the northern frontier, which actually attacked a different town to distract Charles. And a *third* army down in Italy. And that's not even counting all the garrisons on other borders.
Dan: Wow. So they were juggling three or four active fronts?
Ava: Five, if you count the French navy, which was off the coast of Italy fighting alongside the Turks. The French state had never done anything like that before.
Dan: So you have this perfect storm: the gunpowder revolution making sieges longer, massive inflation making everything more expensive, and a political crisis that forced everyone to fight on multiple fronts.
Ava: You've got it. That was the new mould for European war. And to top it all off, these fights started spilling over onto the high seas and into the Americas, Africa, and Asia.
Dan: So now they needed expensive ships on top of their expensive walls.
Ava: That's the one. It was a whole new world of incredibly costly, global conflict. Which, of course, raises the question of how navies themselves were changing...

Ava: A big one to end on! And it’s not just about soldiers and battles, which is what most people think.
