Emma: Okay Dan, imagine you're a dental student. Your first patient has searing tooth pain. You diagnose an infected pulp and know a root canal is needed. Suddenly, that textbook procedure is very, very real. Where do you even begin?

Dan: It’s a moment every dentist remembers! That's what we're mapping out today. You're listening to Studyfi Podcast. So, step one is isolation. You use a rubber dam to keep the area completely sterile.

Emma: Right, no contaminants allowed. What's next after the tooth is isolated?

Dan: You create an access opening, remove the pulp with a barbed broach, and then determine the 'working length' with a small file and an X-ray. This is critical for knowing how deep to clean.

Emma: So you're basically creating a map of the inside of the tooth.

Dan: Exactly! Then comes the "power wash" phase: filing to shape the canal and flushing with disinfectants like NaOCl and EDTA to get it perfectly clean.

Emma: A microscopic power wash! I love it. Okay, so it’s clean and shaped. How do you finish?

Dan: We dry the canal thoroughly with paper points. Then we fill it with a sealer and a rubber-like material called gutta-percha. We pack it in tight, seal the tooth with a final restoration, and get a final X-ray to confirm a perfect job.
