Chloe: Think about the date 1066. You've probably seen it in a textbook, but do you know why it's one of the most important dates in English history?

Noah: It’s the year England was last successfully invaded. We're talking about the Battle of Hastings and the arrival of the Normans.

Chloe: You're listening to Studyfi Podcast. So Noah, who exactly were these Normans? Weren't they French?

Noah: Good question! They were originally Vikings from Scandinavia who settled in northern France. Their leader, the Duke of Normandy, became known as William the Conqueror.

Chloe: And he was crowned King William I in London on Christmas Day, 1066. How did he rule?

Noah: He was a harsh ruler. He built castles all over England to enforce Norman rule and ensure the English people didn't rebel. England became a strong, centralized country under military control.

Chloe: And what about the language? I heard it had a huge impact.

Noah: A massive one. The new rulers spoke Norman-French, which has had a lasting effect on English. So many words related to law and government come directly from them.

Chloe: So the king's power was absolute. Did anyone ever challenge it?

Noah: Eventually, yes! That led to another hugely important document in 1215, the Magna Carta, which was the first real step to limit the king’s power. But the Norman Conquest set the stage for everything.
