  • Learning: Responses to environmental influences, including the physical context, social relationships, and cultural factors.
  • Socialization: The process of absorbing society's attitudes, values, and customs.

The Interaction of Nature and Nurture

It's virtually impossible to separate nature and nurture, as they are deeply intertwined. Their interaction affects development in three key ways:

  1. Passive Genetic Influence: Children inherit genes and live in environments shaped by their parents' genes and experiences. (e.g., children of musicians grow up surrounded by music).
  2. Evocative Influence: A child's genetically influenced appearance and behavior elicit particular responses from others, which in turn affect the child's behavior.
  3. Active Influence: Children actively seek out certain experiences and ignore others, selecting what is pleasant, interesting, or challenging. This influence strengthens as children become more independent.

Research highlights the profound impact of nurture. For example, deaf children without human voice exposure do not naturally learn to speak. The 1991 study Education and the Working Class showed that children from manual worker backgrounds often faced disadvantages in education due to factors like:

  • Less parental encouragement for education compared to middle-class parents.
  • Fewer books at home, impacting reading and vocabulary.
  • Teachers' middle-class background creating a cultural gap (speech, expected behavior).
  • Less access to quiet study spaces, educational visits, and private lessons.
  • Less encouragement of deferred gratification (studying now for long-term rewards) among working-class families.

The study also noted differences in language codes: working-class people often use a restricted code, while middle-class people use a more formal elaborated code, which is also the language of schools, aiding middle-class pupils' comprehension.

Aspects of Development: Physical, Intellectual, Personality, and Social

Human development is complex because growth and change occur across interconnected aspects of the self:

Physical Development

This involves changes in the body, brain, sensory capacities, and motor skills. It significantly influences intellect and personality.

  • An infant's knowledge often comes from senses and motor activity.
  • A child with hearing loss is at risk for delayed language development.
  • In late adulthood, brain changes (e.g., Alzheimer's disease) can lead to intellectual and personality deterioration.

Intellectual Development

This includes changes in mental abilities like learning, memory, reasoning, thinking, and language. It's closely linked to motor and emotional development.

  • A baby's developing memory is related to separation anxiety (fear of mother's absence).
  • Memory influences physical actions; a child remembering being scolded for knocking down a tower may refrain from doing it again.

Personality and Social Development

Personality is each person's unique way of dealing with the world and expressing emotions. Social development refers to relationships with others. Both affect cognitive and physical functioning.

  • Anxiety about a test can impair performance.
  • Social support from friends helps cope with stress's negative effects on physical and mental health.
  • Conversely, physical and intellectual challenges (e.g., poor speech) can lead to social issues like hitting or temper tantrums.

Individual Differences and Stage Theories of Development

While people generally follow the same developmental sequence, there's a wide range of individual differences in the timing and expression of changes. Averages for milestones (first word, puberty) are just that—averages. Extreme deviations might indicate a need for intervention, but normal individual differences are common.

Individual differences increase with age because later in life, experiences and environment exert more influence, leading to diverse outcomes in height, health, comprehension, emotional reactions, and lifestyles.

Stage Theories: A Life Span Perspective

Many psychologists view development as progressing through distinct stages or periods, each marked by specific milestones and cohesive patterns of abilities, motives, and skills. Transitions between stages are often abrupt, with new ways of functioning emerging simultaneously.

The human life span is commonly divided into eight approximate stages:

  1. Prenatal Stage (conception to birth)
  2. Infancy and Toddlerhood (birth to age 3)
  3. Early Childhood (3 to 6 years)
  4. Middle Childhood (6 to 12 years)

Stages of Development: From Conception to Late Adulthood

Each stage presents unique characteristics, events, and developmental challenges.

1. Prenatal Development (Conception to Birth)

This period involves rapid physical growth and organ formation, making the developing organism highly vulnerable to environmental influences. It includes three sub-periods:

  • Germinal Period (Fertilization to 2 weeks): Rapid cell division, forming the zygote.
  • Embryonic Period (2 to 8 weeks): The organism (now an embryo) develops major organs (heart, kidneys, brain). This is the most vulnerable period.
  • Fetal Period (8 weeks to birth): The organism (now a fetus) focuses on organizing structures and establishing functions. Responses like sucking and yawning begin.

Threats in the Prenatal Environment:

Teratogens are agents that can alter or kill the developing organism, reaching the fetus via the placenta. These include diseases (measles, AIDS), toxins (drugs, alcohol), and radiation. For example, alcoholic mothers may have babies with fetal alcohol syndrome (mental retardation, slowed growth, physical malformation).

2. Development of the Newborn; Infancy and Toddlerhood (Birth to Age 3)

Newborns, though seemingly helpless, are surprisingly capable. Infants transition into competent toddlers, exploring their world.

  • Newborn Capabilities: Equipped with reflexes (e.g., rooting reflex for feeding, sucking, swallowing, breathing). Senses of touch, taste, and smell are more acute than sight and hearing at birth.
  • Infancy & Toddlerhood: Rapid physical and motor skill development. Babies form schemes (recurrent action patterns like grasping, throwing) to understand objects. This involves:
  • Assimilation: Incorporating new knowledge into existing schemes (e.g., sucking a cup like a bottle).
  • Accommodation: Modifying existing schemes to make sense of new information (e.g., adjusting mouth for a cup rim).
  • Language Acquisition: First words appear around the first birthday, mostly names. Toddlers acquire about 50 words in 4-6 months. Adults facilitate this with motherese (or child-directed speech)—slow, simple sentences with pauses and inflections.
  • Infants and Parents: Attachment is the close emotional bond with a caregiver, providing emotional security. Separation distress occurs when separated. While continuous maternal attention was once emphasized, stability and a close relationship with an adult are key.
  • Infants and Day Care: Many mothers today work, making day care common. Good quality day care (spacious, well-equipped, low adult-child ratios, trained teachers) is crucial. While younger infants in all-day care may show more insecure attachments in some studies, good care generally doesn't produce ill effects on children over one year old.
