The Development Ladder

Measuring with the HDI

Přepis

James: Imagine two people born on the same day. One in a high-tech city with top-tier hospitals and schools. The other, in a rural village miles from the nearest doctor. Why are their starting lines in life so different?

Sophie: That massive difference is what economists call the development gap. You're listening to Studyfi Podcast. Think of it like a development ladder. Some countries are on higher rungs, we call them 'developed'.

James: And the ones on lower rungs are 'developing', aiming to climb up. So, some must be climbing faster than others, right?

Sophie: Exactly. A group called the BRICS countries are taking huge leaps up that ladder. It's a fascinating and rapid shift.

James: So how do we actually measure where a country is on this ladder? It can't just be about who has the most money.

Sophie: You're right! We use something called the Human Development Index, or HDI. It uses a score based on three key factors.

James: Okay, what are they?

Sophie: First is Health, looking at things like life expectancy. Second is Education, which includes literacy rates. And third, as you'd expect, is Wealth, measured by GDP.

James: So it’s a total picture, not just a bank account.

Sophie: Precisely! It gives a much clearer view of people's actual quality of life.
