James: It does, but it can also be totally different! In the Philippines, the Samal people might group bananas, papayas, and coconuts together as 'kayu'. Not because they're biologically related, but because they share a similar function or importance in their culture.

James: Right. People categorize based on morphology—how it looks—but also on sensory perception, its ecology, and especially its utility. One study found that morphology and sensory perception were the biggest factors, but utility was right behind them. It shows you what a culture truly values.
Ava: Right, so that makes sense. But how do you actually gather that kind of qualitative data? I assume you can't just walk up to people.
James: Well, sometimes you do! That's an informal interview—really just getting a feel for a topic. It’s like a conversation with no script.
Ava: So from there, you get more organized?
James: Exactly. You move to unstructured, then semistructured, where you have a guide. Finally, you have structured interviews with fixed questions. That's for when you need hard data you can count.
Ava: So you go from a casual chat to a formal quiz.

Ava: Okay, so once you have your interview style, how do you pick who to talk to? You can't just ask your friends.
James: Right. For that, we use random sampling. The simplest is just putting names in a hat and drawing a few. Simple, and free from bias.

James: There's also systematic sampling. You might survey every tenth person on a list. But here's the catch… what if every tenth house on the street is a corner house? Your sample would be skewed.
