Ava: Imagine a deep cave, firelight dancing on ancient rock walls. The only sounds are the crackling flames and a storyteller's voice sharing tales of animals who are as clever as people. This was a classroom, a cinema, and a library, all in one.

Noah: And it’s one of the main ways we can look back in time. You’re listening to Studyfi Podcast. Today, we're exploring the lives of the earliest people in southern Africa.

Ava: For thousands of years, hunter-gatherers known as the San roamed these lands. Then, about two thousand years ago, a new way of life began when the Khoikhoi started herding sheep.

Noah: But neither group used writing. So, how do we know anything about them? It’s a great question, and it has two main answers: stories and stuff.

Ava: Stories and stuff. I like that. Let's start with the stories. The San passed down incredible oral histories. These weren’t just for fun; they taught important values.

Noah: Exactly. In the stories, good characters were those who shared and helped, while bad characters were proud and selfish. It tells us what was important to them as a community.

Ava: And the "stuff"? That’s where archaeology comes in. The San were nomadic but would meet in large caves for weeks at a time to share stories and meet relatives.

Noah: Right. Archaeologists have dug in these caves and found tools, beads, and other objects left behind. Each object is a tiny clue to a much larger story.
