Clues in Stories and Objects
Grace: Imagine trying to piece together your family history from centuries ago. But there are no letters, no diaries, no written records at all. It feels almost impossible, right?
Noah: That’s exactly the puzzle historians face with the earliest people in southern Africa. Welcome to Studyfi Podcast. Today we're exploring the lives of hunter-gatherers and herders.
Grace: We're talking about the San and the Khoikhoi people, who lived all over southern Africa.
Noah: Exactly. The San were hunter-gatherers for thousands of years. Then, about two thousand years ago, some communities, known as the Khoikhoi, started herding sheep. The crucial part is, they didn't have writing.
Grace: So if there was no writing, how do we know about their beliefs or daily lives?
Noah: Well, we have two main clues. First, their stories. These tales passed down through generations taught important lessons. Good characters were animals or people who shared, while selfish ones were the villains.
Grace: And the second clue?
Noah: That's where archaeology comes in. San families would gather in large caves each year. Archaeologists have carefully dug in these caves, finding tools and other objects left behind.
Grace: So it's like a time capsule hidden under the dirt!
Noah: It really is! Each object is a tiny piece of the puzzle, telling us about a life lived long ago.
