James: That's the core of it, yes! It sounds complex, but it’s actually a really elegant system for understanding what we’re seeing.

Sara: I love that. You are listening to Studyfi Podcast, and today, we're making sense of geological folds.

James: So, the first and most visual feature is the closing direction. Basically, which way is the fold pointing?

Sara: Okay, like an arrow?

James: Exactly! If a fold closes upwards, where the limbs dip away from the center, it’s an antiform. Think of an 'A' for anti.

Sara: An antiform. And if it has older rocks in its core?

James: Then we call it an anticline. That's a key detail for exams. Old rocks in the core equals an anticline.

Sara: Got it. So what's the opposite? The one that closes downwards?

James: That's a synform. The limbs dip *towards* the center, like a 'U' shape. If it has younger rocks in the middle, it’s a syncline.

Sara: So, what if the fold is just lazy and lies on its side?

James: Geologists have a name for that too! We call those neutral folds. They basically decided to take a nap.
