Mia: And I'm Mia. So, flight controls... it sounds complicated, but the basic idea is actually quite straightforward.

Tom: Okay, so where do we start with this high-flying dance?

Mia: We can split the controls into two main groups: primary and secondary. It's that simple.

Tom: Primary, as in... the most important ones?

Mia: Exactly. Think of the primary flight controls as the main steering for the aircraft. They are responsible for moving the plane about its three axes: lateral, longitudinal, and vertical.

Tom: So, that's rolling side to side, pitching up and down, and turning left and right?

Mia: You've got it. The main components here are the ailerons on the wings, the elevators on the tail, and the rudder, also on the tail. They handle all the fundamental maneuvering.

Tom: So if the primary controls are for steering, what do the secondary ones do? Are they just for backup?

Mia: Great question, but no, they're not backups. They're more like... performance enhancers. They improve the plane's lift and its handling properties, especially at slower speeds.

Tom: Ah, so they help out during specific phases of flight?

Mia: Precisely. This group includes the leading-edge devices and trailing edge flaps—those are the parts you see extending out from the wing during takeoff and landing. It makes the wing work better at low speeds.

Tom: I've seen those! What else is in this group?

Mia: We also have spoilers and speedbrakes. You see them pop up from the top of the wings right after the plane touches down.

Tom: Right! It always looks like the wing is coming apart.

Mia: It does look a bit dramatic! But their job is to 'spoil' the lift and help the plane slow down safely on the runway. The horizontal stabilizer is also part of this system.
