Tom: The mean is the average you’re most familiar with. Just add all the data values together and divide by the total number of values. Simple as that.
Emma: But there are others, right? I always see median and mode mentioned.
Tom: Yes! For the median, you arrange your data in numerical order and find the middle value. Think 'median' like the median strip in the middle of a road.
Emma: Nice one! And the mode?
Tom: Mode is the number that appears most often. Easiest one to spot. If your data set is 1, 5, 2, 5… the mode is 5!
Emma: So once we have our averages, how do we present this all visually?
Tom: Great question. If your data falls into distinct categories, like blood types or flower colours, a bar chart is your go-to.
Emma: And the golden rules for drawing one?
Tom: The bars must have equal width and equal gaps between them. And label your axes! An unlabelled axis is like a cake with no icing.
Emma: A pointless, sad cake. Got it. So, that’s how you nail the data questions.
Emma: Okay, that brings us to our final, and maybe most important point, Tom. How do we use significant figures in our calculations?
Tom: This is the payoff, Emma. It's actually a simple rule. In any calculation, your final answer should be rounded to the *lowest* number of significant figures from your starting data.
Emma: The lowest number... so you find the least precise measurement and match that?
Tom: Exactly. Let me give you an example. Say you're calculating density. The mass is 0.24 grams—that's two significant figures.
Emma: Okay, two sig figs. Got it.
Tom: And the volume is 0.715 cubic centimeters. That's three significant figures.
Emma: So the lowest is two. Our final answer needs to have just two sig figs.
Tom: You've got it! So even if your calculator says 0.33566, you round your final answer to 0.34. And—this is critical—only round at the very end!
Emma: Right, don't round as you go. It's like saving the cherry for the top of the sundae, not stirring it into the ice cream.
Tom: A perfect analogy. Rounding early just introduces errors.
