The research aimed to determine the accuracy of recognizing internally directed cognition (IDC) versus externally directed cognition (EDC) from facial information alone, and which facial features are most informative.

The Experimental Setup: How Attention Was Studied

To investigate this, researchers created a unique experiment. Participants, acting as 'targets,' performed various cognitive tasks designed to elicit either external or internal attention, with varying levels of cognitive demand:

  • Low-Demand EDC: Counting tractor journeys in a video.
  • Low-Demand IDC: Imagining being on a beach scene.
  • High-Demand EDC: Solving a five-letter anagram on a screen.
  • High-Demand IDC: Solving a five-letter anagram mentally.

These tasks lasted about 90 seconds and were followed by questions to ensure full engagement. The target participants were videotaped during these tasks. From these recordings, three types of stimuli were created for evaluation:
