The Mummification Process: A Window into the Body

- Brain Extraction: A hooked probe was inserted through the nostrils to remove the brain. In rare cases, a hole was made in the outer skull for this purpose.
- Evisceration: An incision was made in the left flank to remove most abdominal viscera, with the exception of the kidneys.
- Cleansing: The thoracic and abdominal cavities were washed with palm wine and spices.

- Canopic Jars: The organs were sprinkled with perfume, treated with hot resin, wrapped, and placed in four canopic jars. - Organ Return (21st Dynasty): In the 21st Dynasty, embalmed and wrapped organs, accompanied by wax figures of the Sons of Horus, were returned to the body cavities.
- Dehydration: Body cavities were temporarily stuffed to accelerate dehydration, a process taking about 70 days.
- Resin Application: A thick coat of molten resin was applied to the entire body to tauten the skin and prevent moisture loss.
- Final Touches: Eyebrows were painted, and the body was often decorated with jewelry before being meticulously bandaged.
This intricate process, while religious in nature, provided invaluable, albeit informal, anatomical training.
