Today, we call this event the Big Bang. In a tiny fraction of a second (specifically, one-ten-million-trillion-trillionth of a second), the universe grew tremendously. While much remains unknown about this first instant, we understand that all four basic forces that control everything in the universe were once unified. As the universe expanded, it cooled.
The Four Fundamental Forces Shaping the Cosmos
During this initial blip of time, known as the Planck era, one force separated from the others: gravity. This force is responsible for holding stars and planets together in galaxies, keeping Earth in orbit around the Sun, and, closer to home, preventing you from floating away.
