Regional Varieties of English
English is a global language with diverse regional varieties, differing in pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and spelling.
- British vs. American English:
- Pronunciation (Phonology): BrE is non-rhotic (/r/ only before vowels); AmE is rhotic. Vowel differences: BrE /ɑː/ vs. AmE /æ/ (bath), BrE /ɒ/ vs. AmE /ɑː/ (lot). AmE features T-flapping (/t/ between vowels becomes a soft 'd'). BrE often uses glottal stops for /t/ (bottle). BrE can have Yod coalescence (/tj/ → /tʃ/, Tuesday).
- Spelling Differences: colour vs. color, centre vs. center, organise vs. organize.
