Ben Vautier's Early Life and Artistic Awakening
Ben Vautier was born Benjamin Vautier on July 18, 1935, in Naples, Italy, into a French family. He was the great-grandson of the 19th-century Swiss painter Benjamin Vautier (1829–1898). His early life was marked by extensive travel with his mother after the declaration of World War II, living in Switzerland, Turkey, Egypt, and Italy before finally settling in Nice, France, in 1949.Ben's journey into the art world began in Nice. After working as an errand boy in a bookstore and owning a stationery shop, he opened a record store called Magazin between 1958 and 1973. This store quickly transformed into a vibrant hub for meetings and exhibitions, attracting key figures of what would become the École de Nice, including César, Arman, and Martial Raysse.
It was during this period that Vautier discovered the works of Yves Klein and Nouveau Réalisme. He also became deeply interested in the French Dada artist Marcel Duchamp and the experimental music of John Cage. In 1959, Vautier founded the journal Ben Dieu, and in 1960, he held his first one-man show, Rien et tout, at Laboratoire 32 within his own shop.
