Types of Acute Hand Infections

Hand infections vary in their presentation and severity. Prompt and accurate diagnosis is key to effective treatment.

Cellulitis: Subcutaneous Tissue Infection

Cellulitis is a diffuse infection of the subcutaneous tissue, often associated with lymphangitis. It's usually caused by a single organism, most commonly Staphylococcus aureus or β-hemolytic Streptococcus. Lymphangitic streaking is more often seen with streptococcal infections. This type of infection does not form pus and is typically treated nonsurgically with intravenous antibiotics.
